The Roster is Set: Now What?

The Roster is Set: Now What?

The whistles have gone quiet, the clipboards are tucked away, and the stress of tryout week is officially behind us. Whether you’re staring at a fresh roster with your name on it or figuring out your next move after a cut, one thing is certain: the real work starts today.
Here’s how to navigate the "post-tryout" phase and set yourself up for a massive season.
1. Shift from "Me" to "We"
During tryouts, you’re playing for yourself—trying to stand out and prove your worth. Now that the team is formed, that mindset has to flip. Start building chemistry immediately. Learn your teammates' names, understand their playing styles, and figure out how your skills complement theirs. A team of stars who don't click will always lose to a cohesive unit.
2. Master Your Role
You might have been the go-to scorer on your old team, but maybe this coach needs you to be a defensive specialist or a facilitator. Don’t fight the role; master it. If you aren't sure what's expected of you, ask. A quick conversation with the coach now can prevent a lot of frustration mid-season.
3. Respect the Cut
If you didn't make the team you wanted, give yourself 24 hours to be frustrated, then get to work. Ask the coaches for specific feedback. Was it your conditioning? Your footwork? Your tactical awareness? Use this season to bridge that gap. Join a developmental league, hit the gym, and make it impossible for them to cut you next year.
4. Recovery is Part of the Job
Tryout week is brutal on the body. Now is the time to prioritize sleep, hydration, and mobility work. You don't want to start the first week of official practice with a nagging "overuse" injury.
5. Set Personal Micro-Goals
The season is a marathon. To stay sharp, set small, measurable goals for each week.
  • “This week, I’m going to focus on 100% accuracy with my resets.”
  • “This week, I’m going to be the loudest communicator on the field.”
The rosters are finalized, but the story of your season hasn't been written yet. Let’s make it a good one.
See you on the field!
